Long, long time ago, there was a funny little woman who lived in Japan. She liked to laugh. One day, she was making dumplings out of the rice when one of the dumplings rolled from the table and fell to the earthen floor down to a hole. She tried to reach for it but then suddenly the earthen gave way and she tumbled into a totally different world. There was an unusual road and it was lived with statues of the gods. One of the statues named Jizo Sama told her that he saw her dumplings rolling down the road but she shouldn’t follow it for a wicked oni lives at the end of the road. She didn’t follow his advice and was soon captivated by the wicked oni and brought her to his house so she could cook for him and to the rest of the onis. The oni gave her a magic paddle. With the use of it, one grain of rice will become a hundred to make a pot full. After a few months, she became lonely that she decided to run away back to her little house with the magic paddle. The oni discovered it and they soon tried to drink all the water in the river so she can’t row the boat and escape. Soon, the boat could not go further. She jumped out of it and tried to run away but she was stuck in the mud. She looked very funny that the onis started to laugh loudly which in turn let out the water back to the river.
The funny little woman was able to go back her little house. There, she continued to make dumplings out of the magic paddle and sold it. She became the richest woman in Japan.

Sometimes, he also entertains visitors. One day, the owner hung a new sign in the store. It was an announcement about a puppet show. Mulligan was so curious about the sign. Then he forgot all about the sign when he saw a pigeon right outside the door. He dislikes birds. He warned the pigeon not to enter the shop. But the pigeon entered when a family went in the store. No one saw except Mulligan so he chased the bird around the store. He destroyed many things in the shop. The bird then got tired and it rested next to a funny looking bird. The strange bird was a fake bird in the puppet show. Mulligan saw this and he tried to catch the bird. He was able to catch the bird and the real bird was set free by the store owner. Mulligan felt so proud of his accomplishment that day. After all, that’s what bookstore cats are supposed to do, isn’t it?

One rainy Saturday, he found an extraordinary one. It was flaming red, shiny and perfectly round, like a marble. As he was scrutinizing the pebble, he felt the cold rain sloping on his back. He wished the rain would stop. He was aware that rain don’t stop immediately so he was amazed when the rain vanished as if it never appeared. All his life he never had such so he tested if the pebble has magic. He desired for the rain to be back setting aside the pebble, but nothing happened. This time, while holding the pebble, he wished for the rain and that made the sky shoot down rain accompanied by lightning and thunder.
With great excitement, he led his way back home. He was startled to see a man and a hungry lion. He panicked then wished to be a rock. So, it happened. When the lion went away, he couldn’t be donkey again because the pebble was far and he’s unable to pick it up. He felt hopeless and helpless.
Meanwhile, Sylvester’s parents were worried of him. With all their might, they tried to find him but were in vain. Days and months passed by. Mr. And Mrs. Duncan felt miserable. Seasons have gone; Sylvester still lies as a rock on Strawberry Hill.
One day, Sylvester’s parents decided for a picnic, to ease their burden, on the hill. Mr. Duncan saw a pebble beside the rock. Knowing that his son likes collecting pebbles, he picked it up and put it on the rock. Sylvester doesn’t know it. He just wished to be a donkey again so he could be with his parents. Suddenly, he was back. His parents were surprised but filled with joy. There are a lot of questions in the parent’s mind but they just savor the moment of being together, of being reunited once again, for they knew there’s still a lot of time.

3D5 THE GIRL WHO LOVED WILD HORSES
CHARACTERS:
The village girl- she was the Navajo girl who likes taking care of the horses
Horses- they share a special bond with the village girl because she loves them
Handsome stallion- he was the leader of the wild horses and has mystical powers.
This is a story about a Navajo Indian village girl who loved to take care of horses. She gets up early everyday and leads the horses down to the river. She talked to them in a soft voice and they obediently followed her to the river bank. Many of the villagers observed that the girl shared a special bond with the horses.
One day, when the girl was out in the fields with the horses, it suddenly started raining hard. There was also blinding lightning and deafening thunder. All the horses got terribly scared and galloped as fast as they could. The girl tried to call on the horses and calm them but they couldn’t hear her voice. The girl was also afraid so she held on tightly to her horse’s mane as it galloped with the other horses.
The horses kept on galloping because of their terrible fear of the storm. When the storm finally passed, the horses were already far from their grazing fields. The girl and the horses were already tired from the long journey so they rested in the night.
The following day, the girl was awakened by a loud neighing. It was a beautiful stallion who was the leader of all the wild horses. She was happy to have met him and all her horses were also glad to be with the wild horses.
In the girl’s village, the people were still looking for her but they could find neither her nor her horses. After a year, some riders spotted a handsome stallion beside a colt which was carrying the village girl. She waved to them but the wild horses quickly ran away. The riders went back to the village and reported what happened. The men prepared to chase the wild horses and find the girl. They were able to get the village girl because she fell from her horse.
The girl went back to her village and was happy to see her parents again. However, they noticed that their daughter was sad because she missed being with the wild horses. Every night, the villagers could hear the stallion sadly calling out for the village girl.
One day, the village girl became ill and when she asked what would make her well again; she said that she would love to be with the wild horses.
The girl’s parents loved her so much and permitted her to go back and live with the wild horses. Her parents gave her some gifts before she went away. The village people gave some gifts to the wild horses. In return, the village girl gave her parents a colt.
At last, the girl was happy again with the wild horses. However, she never forgets her people. Every year, she came back to her village and gave her parents a colt.
One day, there came a time when the girl didn’t return to her village. Some hunters saw that there was a beautiful new mare with the wild horses. The village people were sure that the new mare was actually the village girl.
Today, Navajo people continue to remember that they have relatives among the Horse people and they are happy to know that the horses are free.

3B15 THE BLACK SNOWMAN
CHARACTERS:
Jacob Miller- a teen-age black American boy who is ashamed of his descent
Peewee Miller- a younger brother of Jacob who has always maintained a positive view in life
Mrs. Miller- a mother of Jacob and Peewee who strives to make everything good for her children
The Black Snowman- the creation of Jacob who became alive when a colorful magic cloth was wrapped around it
SUMMARY:
Basically, the story encourages all people with African descent to be proud of their heritage.
Meet the black American family, the Millers. Mrs. Miller has two kids. The older one is Jacob and the younger is Peewee. They’re poor and the mother always tries her best to make everything fine even though life was hard for them. Amidst this situation, Jacob is not happy being black. He thinks, these difficult things happen to them because they’re black. If they were white, then life would have been easier. His younger brother and mother thankfully didn’t share same thoughts with him.
In time, to let the time pass or to stay away from boredom, they made a black snowman. It’s black because the snow was trodden a hundred times by a lot of feet. Peewee saw a “kente” in garbage and wrapped it around their black snowman. Unknown to him, the kente is a magic cloth. It made the black snowman alive. The snowman in turn tried hard to turn the head of Jacob around, made him realized that being black is something that he has to be proud of. He is a descendant of brave warriors, of impressive warriors, etc. In time, the black snowman saved his brother along with Jacob’s help too in a fire that destroyed an old building across from their house. The snowman melted and did not continue to exist but his short existence left a deep mark in Jacob’s inner psyche that he’s now proud to be black and will never feel ashamed of it anymore.
