SUMMARY:
Basically, the story encourages all people with African descent to be proud of their heritage.
Meet the black American family, the Millers. Mrs. Miller has two kids. The older one is Jacob and the younger is Peewee. They’re poor and the mother always tries her best to make everything fine even though life was hard for them. Amidst this situation, Jacob is not happy being black. He thinks, these difficult things happen to them because they’re black. If they were white, then life would have been easier. His younger brother and mother thankfully didn’t share same thoughts with him.
In time, to let the time pass or to stay away from boredom, they made a black snowman. It’s black because the snow was trodden a hundred times by a lot of feet. Peewee saw a “kente” in garbage and wrapped it around their black snowman. Unknown to him, the kente is a magic cloth. It made the black snowman alive. The snowman in turn tried hard to turn the head of Jacob around, made him realized that being black is something that he has to be proud of. He is a descendant of brave warriors, of impressive warriors, etc. In time, the black snowman saved his brother along with Jacob’s help too in a fire that destroyed an old building across from their house. The snowman melted and did not continue to exist but his short existence left a deep mark in Jacob’s inner psyche that he’s now proud to be black and will never feel ashamed of it anymore.
