OWL MOON

It was late at night when the lead character who was a little girl and his father left their house into the deep forest. She waited so much for this moment. On their way to the forest, they could only hear the sound of a train and later on, the barking of the dog mixed up with the train sound. And there on the snow, were the footprints of the girl and his father.

At first, nobody ever dared to speak up because both of them know that when they go owling, they should be very quiet. They reached a clearing in the forest and her father looked up in the sky as the moonlight reflected on his face. His father tried to shout, “whoo-whoo” but there was no owl at sight. Her father shrugged his shoulders and so did she but she was not disappointed at all.

They stayed a little more in the clearing. Then her father brought out a flashlight and there on the light’s direction was on owl that landed on the branch of a tree. They stared back at each other. After some time, the owl flew away.

It was only after that, that the girl removed her scarf from her mouth and tried to breathe out a sigh of relief. Then she and her father found their way back home after their owling activity.

SEEING STARS

The book starts with a question as to how many stars can we see with our naked eyes and that of a telescope.
It goes on with the information that stars look so small because they are very very far away. Also, they twinkle because we see them through air and dust.
Stars are made of hot gases that make the center of a star incredibly hot such as that of the sun. The sun is the closest star to our planet, but not the biggest or the hottest. It would take one over four months to reach Earth.
Chapter 2 of the book talks about the Milky Way. It explains how it got its name and what a galaxy is. Furthermore, it says that the shape of it is spiral. It provides information as well about the solar system. It says that the sun and the solar system travel around the center of the Milky Way. The Milky Way is just one of a hundred billion galaxies.
Chapter 3 deals with constellations and how they were used before as a compass and calendar to tell about direction and day, respectively. Some constellations can be seen a year and for others, all year long.
Chapter 4 enumerates the different kinds of constellations. Among those mentioned are, The Great Bear, The Big Dipper, the Little Bear, Cassiopeia, The Lion, The Swan, Pegasus, Orion, Pleiades and Taurus. For each of the constellation, the book provides a legend as to how each gets its name.
Finally there is a suggestion on how to go stargazing.

UNCLE JED’S BARBERSHOP

Sarah Jean admires her uncle Jed very much. Uncle Jed is a barber and he often tells her his dream of having a barbershop. Uncle Jed’s dream seems to be odd. Most people make a living on a farm but he is different. He dreams of having his barbershop.

When Sarah was five, she needed an operation. Her parents could not afford it and asked Uncle Jed’s help. Without hesitation, he gave the needed amount. For him, it’s better to sacrifice for some years than losing his niece.

After a time, Uncle Jed bought a land and was able to build a shop. Yet, he doesn’t have enough equipment. Unfortunately, another unexpected thing happened. He lost his $3000 due to bank failing. He started saving all over again. He cut his customer’s hair even if they couldn’t pay him in cash.

When he was 79 years old, he opened his long-time dream barbershop. People came from all over the country to have their hair cut. Sarah Jean had her hair cut, too.

Uncle Jed died not long after that but he died a happy man. He didn’t give up on his dream and that was what his niece learned from him- TO DREAM.
